What is Media Sales?

A job in media sales essentially involves the selling of advertising space or airtime to media agencies or companies direct. The main types of media mediums are:

·        Local and Regional Newspapers

·        National Newspapers

·        Business to Business (B2B) and Consumer Magazines

·        Online

·        Television, Cinema, Radio

·        Outdoor and Ambient

·        Directories

·        Exhibitions and Events

Graduates are often targeted for entry level jobs in media sales and they are rewarded with competitive basic salaries, good commission/bonus schemes, the potential to travel and most publishing companies offer excellent training courses. Typically, entry level media sales executives, with the right skills and qualities to succeed in advertising media sales will be given basic sales training including: negotiation, selling techniques, handling objections and advice on how to close a sale.

The role of a media sales person primarily involves developing and building long term relationships with potential advertisers through telephone calls and face to face meetings. In addition to this a media sales executive would be expected to generate new business.

Although publishing companies generally want to attract graduates into their entry level media sales jobs, personality and attitude is often more important. Some experience in a sales or customer service work may also be useful.
