Statutory leave to increase

The Government is pushing ahead with proposals to increase workers' statutory holiday entitlement from 20 days per year to 28.

Under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) proposals, statutory entitlement to annual leave will be increased in two stages, rising from 20 to 24 days on 1 October 2007, and from 24 to 28 days on 1 October 2008.

The move has been lobbied for by trade unions, unhappy that employers are not legally required to give workers time off for bank holidays.  The DTI is launching a second public consultation on the implementation of the changes.
